Introduction:

In observance of Pride Month, the importance of LGBTQ+ sensitivity training in the workplace has never been more critical. This comprehensive guide offers detailed insights into various incidents of harassment across industries, emphasizing the need for all organizations to prioritize a more inclusive and respectful work environment

Why LGBTQ+ Sensitivity Training is Necessary:

As we delve into reports from across India and the globe, the ongoing issues of LGBTQ+ harassment in professional settings become apparent. Each example serves as a compelling reason for enhanced training programs.

Incidents Highlighting the Need for Awareness:

1. Textile Industry, Chennai: “In a disturbing event at a textile factory, a female employee reported inappropriate physical advances from a colleague under the guise of a game. This incident underscores the urgent requirement for stringent anti-harassment policies.”

2. Start-up firm, Chennai: “At a dynamic start-up, a breach of privacy occurred when an employee’s personal information was shared without consent. This act highlights the critical need for comprehensive privacy policies and respect for personal boundaries.”

3. Fintech Sector, Mumbai: “Inappropriate discussions about personal lives and sexual orientations have led to a hostile work atmosphere, showcasing the need for professionalism and mutual respect.”

4. E-commerce Giant, Bangalore: “Public comments such as ‘that sounds so gay’ have inadvertently exposed colleagues’ private lives, highlighting the necessity for respectful communication and sensitivity.”

5. Banking Sector, Major Metro City: “Discriminatory remarks about a customer’s gender expression, such as questioning their attire, reflect deep-seated biases that must be addressed.”

6. IT Firm, Noida: “Queries like ‘Who is the man in the relationship?’ invade personal privacy, demonstrating a fundamental lack of understanding of diverse relationship dynamics.”

7. Recruitment Process, U.S.-Based Candidate: “A recruiter’s mocking of a candidate’s voice, post-disclosure of their transgender identity, which later gained attention on social media, points to the pervasive nature of casual bigotry.”

8. Leaders addressing employees in townhalls and Industry events: “Good morning, Ladies and Gentleman”, an important opening statement by leaders that leaves out the non-binary folks in their audience and sets the culture of exclusion.

Industry-Wide Reflections:

From Chennai to the USA, these incidents cut across all layers of society and industry, showing the ubiquitous need for sensitivity training. HR departments, from top executives to entry-level employees, play a pivotal role in cultivating respectful and inclusive workplaces.

Conclusion:

The examples provided illustrate the pervasive and varied nature of LGBTQ+ harassment in the workplace. It is imperative for organizations to implement ongoing training and foster environments where respect and inclusivity are at the forefront of corporate culture. Let’s use Pride Month as a springboard for lasting change.”

A recent case in the High Court of Karnataka has exposed the harsh consequences of workplace harassment faced by an LGBTQ+ individual. The loss of 35-year-old Vivek Raj has prompted a serious look at the current legal framework, especially the PoSH Act of 2013. It has become clear that the law needs a significant update to ensure the protection of everyone, no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation.

LGBTQ+ Discrimination in The Labour Market

Marina Maria Gorsuch, Assistant Professor at St. Catherine University, studied workplace dynamics for the LGBTQ+ community, exploring if gay women face challenges similar to heterosexual counterparts. Using fictional resumes with LGBTQ+ indicators, the study found that while straight women received favorable ratings, a discriminatory effect emerged when LGBTQ+ indicators were present. Male respondents exhibited a clear negative bias, especially against gay men. Interestingly, women showed a smaller, statistically insignificant negative response, highlighting nuanced challenges within the LGBTQ+ spectrum.

The plight of the LGBTQ+ community in India is not far off from the east. The case of Vivek Raj is proof enough.

Reflecting on a Decade: Is the PoSH Act Enough?

It’s been ten years since the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act was put into action in 201It’s time we take a closer look at how effective it has been. While it was a good step towards a safer work environment, the challenges of 2022, especially post-pandemic, show its limitations. The law, designed for women, unintentionally overlooks that anyone, regardless of gender, can be a victim of sexual harassment.

A Glaring Omission in Coverage

The PoSH Act, 2013, has been a commendable step toward fostering a secure work environment. However, the law requires a transformative update to address the dynamic intersectionality prevalent in today’s fluid professional arenas.

Every office today harbors members of the LGBTQ+ community who often find themselves subjected to various forms of harassment, ranging from intrusive personal questions to exposure to explicit content. The realization strikes that the existing legislation, while well-intentioned, focuses solely on protecting women, inadvertently overlooking the fact that any individual, regardless of gender, can fall victim to sexual harassment.

A decade since the enactment of the law, the need for change resonates louder than ever. The post-pandemic workplace dynamics have given rise to myriad intersectionality that demand immediate attention. The existing legislation’s gender-specific focus raises concerns about its discriminatory nature, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and progressive approach.

The Call to Action: Businesses as Agents of Change

The current law neglects to protect men and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The call to action is clear—develop a gender-neutral policy that safeguards all employees, irrespective of gender identity.

Implementing Zero Tolerance for Harassment Through CoC

The policy must be a beacon of intolerance for sexual harassment, empowering every employee to report instances in alignment with robust policies.

Companies must integrate this commitment into their Code of Conduct (CoC), fostering a culture of zero tolerance for sexual harassment irrespective or in a deeper sense, especially of gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

The fundamental rights of all employees must be respected, transcending discrimination based on gender identity. The Indian Constitution guarantees the right to life, equality, and prohibits discrimination through Articles 14, 15, and 21.

Creating a Sensitized Workplace: Collective Responsibility

The reimagined workplace should not only protect its employees but also sensitize them to the importance of shielding their colleagues from harassment. This collective responsibility, viewed as a human right, aligns with the ongoing initiatives surrounding mental health, fitness, and inclusivity across diverse backgrounds. This can start by understanding the terms:

Gender Identity

Definition: Gender identity refers to an individual’s deeply-felt internal sense of their own gender. It is an intrinsic understanding of being male, female, or another gender, which may or may not align with the sex assigned at birth.

Characteristics: It is a personal and subjective aspect of one’s identity, forming the basis of how an individual perceives themselves in terms of gender, regardless of societal expectations.

Sexual Orientation:

Definition: Sexual orientation relates to an individual’s romantic or sexual attraction to people of the opposite gender, the same gender, or both genders. It is a consistent pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions.

Diversity: Sexual orientation exists on a spectrum, including but not limited to heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, and pansexuality. People may identify with a specific sexual orientation based on the genders to which they are attracted.

Gender Expression:

Definition: Gender expression encompasses how a person outwardly presents their gender through appearance, clothing, grooming, and behavior. It reflects an individual’s interpretation and outward manifestation of their gender identity.

Cultural Variations: Gender expression is culturally influenced and can vary significantly across different societies and historical periods. It includes visible attributes such as clothing choices, hairstyle, and mannerisms.

Understanding these terms is crucial for effective communication, promoting respect for individual identities, and ensuring compliance with legal frameworks aimed at preventing discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.

Revolutionizing the Sexual Harassment Act

The revolution envisioned in rewriting the Sexual Harassment Act heralds a future where companies prioritize the well-being of all employees, fostering a better workspace. The ripple effects extend beyond corporate boundaries, contributing to increased growth not only for businesses but for humanity as a whole. As more companies adopt progressive policies, the workspace becomes a bastion of happiness, reflecting the true spirit of inclusivity and progress.

Sensitivity to Language Changes

The language around gender, sexual orientation, and related concepts continues to evolve. Being sensitive to these changes and using inclusive language fosters an environment that respects the diverse experiences and identities within the broader community.

Gossiping or making fun of a co-worker’s gender identity, sexual orientation, or gender expression is a form of harassment. While the POSH Act does not provide direct protection to the LGBTQ+ community, some progressive organizations have taken steps to extend inclusivity and protection to all employees.

Here are some ways in which organizations can contribute to protecting the LGBTQ+ community:

Inclusive Policies

Forward-thinking organizations should choose to develop and implement inclusive policies that explicitly mention protection against harassment based on gender identity or sexual orientation. These policies can ensure a more comprehensive approach to preventing and addressing all forms of harassment, including those faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.

Internal Committees (IC) Inclusivity

Organizations can ensure that their Internal Committees (IC) responsible for handling harassment complaints are well-trained and sensitive to the concerns of LGBTQ+ employees. The IC can be educated on the unique challenges faced by individuals from the LGBTQ+ community and be equipped to address complaints without bias.

Training and Awareness Programs

Conducting regular training and awareness programs that include information on diversity, inclusion, and LGBTQ+ issues can foster a more understanding and supportive workplace. Sensitizing employees to the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals can contribute to a more respectful and accepting environment.

Non-Discrimination Policies

Organizations can implement explicit non-discrimination policies that encompass gender identity and sexual orientation. Such policies send a clear message that discrimination or harassment based on LGBTQ+ status will not be tolerated.

Supportive Work Environment

Creating a supportive and inclusive work environment involves fostering a culture where diversity is celebrated and all employees feel valued and respected. Open communication channels and support systems can contribute to a workplace where LGBTQ+ individuals feel safe.

Advocacy and Allyship

Encouraging allyship within the organization helps create a network of support for LGBTQ+ employees. Organizations can actively participate in LGBTQ+ advocacy initiatives and events to showcase their commitment to inclusivity.

Tata Steel: Leading the Way

Tata Steel emerges as a beacon among employee-friendly companies, consistently introducing policies that enhance the well-being of its workforce. Recognized as the Top Employer for LGBTQ+ inclusion by the India Workplace Equality Index in 2020, Tata Steel stands as a prominent ally of the LGBTQ+ community. Offering perks such as Mediclaim insurance covering partners irrespective of gender and sexuality, leave for new parents, and a robust Diversity & Inclusion program, Tata Steel’s commitment to workplace diversity is evident.

Protecting LGBTQ+: A Moral and Business Imperative

The journey toward safeguarding LGBTQ+ rights under the Sexual Harassment Act is both a moral and business imperative. While individual organizations can take steps to create an inclusive environment, legal frameworks, including the POSH Act, may need to evolve to explicitly address the protection of LGBTQ+ individuals from workplace harassment.

As we navigate this landscape, let’s remember that creating an inclusive work environment benefits everyone, leading to a more equitable and prosperous future.

Pride Month is a significant commemoration of the long struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit of equal justice for the LGBTQ+ community. It is a vibrant celebration that promotes awareness, inclusivity, and acceptance. The month of June marked as Pride Month, calls for our undivided attention towards the LGBTQ+ community.

Pride Month serves as a reminder of progress made and work yet to be done. The month-long celebration offers a platform to raise awareness, promote visibility, and advocate for equal rights. Colourful parades, rallies, and events demonstrate solidarity and unity within the LGBTQ+ community.

The Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk started in July 1999, is the oldest pride walk in India and South Asia. Initially known as “The Friendship Walk,” it holds a special place in the LGBTQ+ movement. The event emphasizes unity and acceptance, fostering community and pride among participants.

To celebrate Pride, CecureUs held a panel discussion to shine a light on the LGBTQ+ community and the importance of its diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The panel included Sqn Ldr Delshad Master and Carolyn Nitya Jawahar Shanthakumar who shared insights on their experiences and challenges in fostering LGBTQ+ awareness in the workplace.

Here are some takeaways from the panel discussion that can help organizations celebrate and embrace Pride in their spaces.

Delshad, the Founder of EdKronicles and an LGBTQ+ ally, embarked on a journey of compassion and active engagement with the queer community. As a Veteran of the Indian Air Force, she realized that despite the Armed India Forces being diverse, there were more opportunities to embrace diversity outside of that space. Witnessing the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community, Delshad became committed to creating an inclusive environment. Through non-judgmental listening and removing biases, she offered vital support, leading to transformative moments like helping a skeptical parent find acceptance. Beyond queer affirmative counselling, Delshad engaged in LGBTQ+ advocacy, fostering safe spaces in the workplace. Her story inspires others to challenge biases, embrace allyship, and promote acceptance.

Carolyn Nitya Jawahar Shanthakumar, a dedicated ally and core member of SC Pride at Standard Chartered Bank, demonstrates resilience and commitment to driving workplace change. As a Senior Manager at SC, Carol actively advocates for LGBTQ+ inclusion, engaging with employee resource groups and supporting related initiatives. Recognizing the significance of a safe work environment, she has implemented policies fostering acceptance and understanding among colleagues.

Viji Hari, the CEO of CecureUs, is an accomplished professional with over 23 years of experience in the field. As a consultant, trainer, and subject matter expert in the Prevention of Harassment, Diversity & Inclusion, and Mental Wellness, Viji has worked with over 200 clients across India. Viji’s expertise also extends to helping organizations establish DEI charters, and she is the author of two books, “BCC: Behind Closed Cubicles” and “Break the Taboo.”

The panelists shared valuable insights during the panel discussion that can move mountains for the queer community. Here are some excerpts:

Overcoming Attitudinal Barriers and Fostering Inclusion

Delshad and Carol shed light on the attitudinal barriers that exist in the workplace and discuss strategies to overcome them, fostering inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community.

Overcoming attitudinal barriers requires a collective effort. Organizations must create an environment where diversity and inclusion are celebrated, and individuals are encouraged to challenge their own biases. By fostering a culture of empathy, respect, and understanding, attitudinal barriers can be gradually dismantled, leading to a more inclusive and accepting workplace for everyone.

The Power of Dialogue and Communication.

Pride Month is a time to reflect on the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, such as rejection, discrimination, and prejudice. These experiences can lead to severe consequences like depression, trauma, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Addressing these issues and creating an environment of empathy, support, and harmony is crucial.

A Journey Towards Acceptance and Understanding.

The first step to accepting and understanding is knowing that Sex identity, gender and sexuality are three different terms. Sex identity refers to an individual’s internal sense of their gender, which may not necessarily align with their assigned sex at birth. Gender encompasses a range of identities beyond the binary of male and female. Sexuality refers to an individual’s emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction to others. Gender expression relates to how individuals outwardly express their gender identity through appearance, behaviour, and presentation. Recognizing and respecting these differences is vital for creating inclusive environments that validate and honour diverse identities and experiences.

Introducing LGBTQ+ To Organizations

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives are necessary to not only foster a safe workplace but also help improve retention and employee engagement in the workplace.

An anonymous survey will help you understand how comfortable employees are in expressing their queer identities. When the ratio of employees who confidently express their queer identities crosses 5%, organizations can know that they are on the right track. However, this may only be the bare minimum.

Carol advocated that organizations should introduce the concept of LGBTQ+ at the organization by starting small and gradually increasing awareness and education. She emphasized the idea that being different is not bad and challenged stereotypical boxes. Her approach aimed to create a more open-minded and accepting environment within the company. Her goal is to continuously increase the ratio above 5% and create a safe and inclusive workplace to tap into the benefits of introducing DEI in organizations.

Leaders, Leading the Way – The role of leadership support in fostering inclusion is magnanimous. Leaders should actively advocate for inclusive policies and foster a culture of acceptance within the organization. By taking a proactive stance, leaders can set the tone for the entire workforce, promoting an environment where all employees feel safe and valued.

Initiatives at Standard Chartered Bank Setting an Example

Carol’s journey at Standard Chartered Bank provides insights into initiatives that have promoted LGBTQ+ awareness and acceptance within the organization. It began with the powerful message of embracing differences. Creating awareness and increasing education laid the foundation for inclusivity. Carol emphasized that being different is not negative and encouraged employees to break free from stereotypical boxes.

Over the years, various initiatives at Standard Chartered Bank have transformed employees’ thinking processes. Events like the “Human Library,” where individuals share personal stories and experiences, have fostered empathy and understanding. Pride Bazaar and Pride Concerts are also inclusive events that celebrate diversity and promote acceptance. Another such initiative is encouraging employees to add pronouns in signatures, which creates inclusivity in the workspace.

A Step Beyond the Boardrooms

As we celebrate Pride Month, it is essential to embrace a mindset of non-judgment and acceptance towards others’ appearances and preferences, not just within our workspaces but also out into the world. Let us commit ourselves to fostering an open-minded society where the LGBTQIA+ community can experience true freedom and acceptance. By challenging biases and promoting understanding, we can create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued for who they are.

Together, let us stand for equality and celebrate the beauty of diversity in all its forms.

The world is not an easy place for the LGBTQ+ community. For centuries, thanks to preconceived notions in society, the stigma has made it challenging for LGBTQ+ to come out and express themselves or feel included. However, in the past few decades, society has become evolved. With Inclusive diversity taking the corporates on a progressive path, several organizations have opened up opportunities for LGBTQ+ in their workplaces. The workshops on Inclusive Diversity have enlightened employees about the importance of inclusiveness and how understanding the nuances of inclusive diversity can make the organization a better place.

June is around the corner, and with many preparing to join the LGBTQIA Community for their Freedom Movement, celebrations are on the way. While we may not see actual parades happening in society, many who belong to the community with their supporters gear up to go virtual this year in their pride month celebrations.

June is Pride Month, as it is famously called the world over. Indians have joined the celebrations slowly but steadily over the second half of the last decade. While the Rainbow flags and merchandise are coming out everywhere, have you ever wondered why there is a celebration of Pride Month and its true significance? Read on to know more!

How it all started?

The LGBTQIA community today holds more rights in society across the globe than it did a century ago. The struggle has been long and tiresome, but they push on for inclusiveness and complete freedom to be themselves among others in society. Many have come forward to show solidarity and support for this cause. Every year the celebrations and the freedom movement only grow stronger with more people coming out of the closets and many more showing support to the community.

Even in the latter part of the 1900s, the situation in society was different. In many countries, especially the developed ones, being open about sexuality (if a person was not straight) and expressing it in any way was strictly looked down upon to the extent of it being a criminal offense.

The LGBTQIA community was forced to act ‘normal,‘ with homosexuality even considered a mental disease!

In New York, the late 60s saw a few Gay bars become a safe haven for Homosexuals, Transgenders, and anyone else who did not fit the stereotypical norms of the society. Here, the customers could be themselves and embrace their sexuality, irrespective of their gender. The Stonewall Inn, situated in the Greenwich Village phase of New York City, was one such Gay bar.

The Stonewall Uprising:

On June 28, 1969, the customers of the Stonewall Inn began trickling in for a night of relaxation. It was a Saturday, and the bar was filled with regular patrons. An evening of fun was disrupted by the New York State Policemen. Not dressing as per the accepted gender norms was deemed a criminal offense and gave power to the police to arrest people for the same. For this reason, the police entered the bar and began shoving the customers out.

By this time, the customers had grown weary of the discrimination. They were enraged with the mistreatment faced so far because of their sexual orientation. Tensions escalated quickly, with the crowd present turning against the Police force. The news spread soon, and the LGBTQIA community from across the city joined the customers at the bar, turning the episode into a riot.

The riot was soon quashed for the night, only for them to continue over the next few days, only this time erupting across the city, eventually starting movements across societies. While several stirs had been organized by the LGBTQIA activists from the early 1900s, the fervour of these riots and the eventual support from the people of society gathered the media attention and the entire United States.

This marked the first significant rising of the community, fighting for their rights to be themselves in what they wore, who they chose to be with, and the right to be considered ‘normal’ as everyone was. This also changed a lot for the LGBTQIA community in recognition, which was not entirely on a negative note. They garnered the support of thousands for the cause of inclusiveness, and rightly so.

In 1970, the first Parades happened throughout the United States in June, marking the pride month celebrations to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising, as it came to be called soon after. The celebrations were to recognize it as a significant moment in the history of the LGBTQIA Freedom Movement. Many more Pride Parades have happened since, and until 2020, which marked the 50th Anniversary of Pride Month.

1973 saw another major milestone when homosexuality was no longer considered a mental illness in society, marking the beginning of inclusive diversity for the LGBTQ+ community. 2009 witnessed a law being introduced, criminalizing gender identity crimes, labelling them as hate crimes. The Supreme Court of the United States legalized same-sex marriages in 2015 to set the stage for inclusive diversity for the LGBTQ+, a milestone to be appreciated.

Why celebrate and be a part of the Pride Month Celebrations?

When we indulge in the celebrations, we extend our support for the concept of Inclusive diversity and for the entire LGBTQ+ community. The international community has taken quite a while to begin accepting those of the Pride Community without any prejudices whatsoever. In India, the story has been no different. It is imperative to understand that, while the people in the LGBTQIA community are different from the standards that society has so far set and strived to maintain, they are no different from anyone else in the Human Race. It is the right of every individual to be themselves and dress as they want to, or to own their sexuality, orientation, and who they want to live with. If differences are to be spoken about, then it is crucial to remember that every person on this planet is unique, and no two individuals can be forced to become like the other against their will.

This difference is what pride month and parades celebrate. The celebrations of pride month also demand that every individual owns the right to be themselves, however different they may be from the norms of the society.

The aim is to incorporate inclusive diversity in every nook and corner of the society, making it easy for a person of the LGBTQIA community to walk into any room, be open about their identity, and be treated just like anyone else sans judgment or prejudice.

The Spring 2019 Global attitude survey that measured the percentage of acceptance of same-sex relationships from 2013 to 2019 recorded the following numbers: 76 – 86% in the UK, 60 – 72% in the US, and 15 to 37% in India. These numbers show the paradigm shift in these countries concerning the LGBTQIA+ community, with a lot of them recognizing the community as equal and criminalizing gender-based hate crimes.

As of 2019, 28 countries have legalized same-sex marriages, and 43 countries have made provisions to protect the community against hate crimes and homophobia. These countries, however, are outweighed by 72 countries that criminalize same-sex activity and 8 countries that punish these activities by death.

Thus, celebrating Pride Month and emphasizing the need for the complete Global recognition of the community is currently the need of the hour.

The Pride month: Celebrations and scenes in India:

In the Indian context, on September 6, 2018, the Honourable Supreme Court of India, in a landmark ruling, abolished Article 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), decriminalizing it, much to the applause of the public. In a hearing, a Madras High Court Judge recently sought counselling to understand homosexuality and the LGBTQIA community, wanting to learn how to be inclusive. Our country, rich in diversity, is bound to be proud of these changes!

With the Supreme court’s ruling, much has changed in the country, but we still have a long way to go. The changing laws show that we are on the right path, but it will take longer for the mindsets to change, evolve, and adapt to the concept of inclusive diversity. More than the Laws changing, the need for education, understanding, and awareness of sensitivity to the LGBTQIA community will help our society progress when implementing inclusive diversity as an entity.

The younger generations have been showing great support to the cause of pride month, and we have every reason to believe that while acceptance may be slow, we are well on our way to achieving what the celebrations of pride month and the movement itself seek to achieve.

LGBTQIA+ is an acronym that represents different identities of the extremely diverse and inclusive community. To support an ever-growing community that is constantly evolving, it’s important to understand exactly what they stand for.

The first 3 letters of the acronym – LGB, primarily represent the sexual identity of an individual. In other words, the identity of a person based on their romantic interest, sexual interest, or attraction.

L – Lesbian: Refers to a woman who is sexually, romantically, or emotionally attracted to another woman.

G – Gay: Refers to an individual who is sexually, romantically, or emotionally attracted to another person of the same gender.

B – Bisexual: Refers to a man or a woman who is sexually, romantically, or emotionally attracted to more than one gender (not necessary that the attraction is simultaneous).

The letter T that follows has had quite a few terms and definitions, all dealing with gender identity. The most commonly accepted term corresponding to this letter of the acronym is as given below.

T – Transgender: This term refers to all those individuals whose gender identity or expression does not correspond or match with the sex (male/female) they were assigned at birth.

Trans and Transsexual have also been interchangeably used overtime in place of transgender.

However, while the former is more of an umbrella term for members of the transgender community, the latter only indicates those individuals who are in the process of transition or have already transitioned from one sex to another through surgery or medical treatments. Hence the term transsexual is to be used with great caution and sensitivity, and only after an individual has identified as being transsexual.

Another point to note is that, while many individuals choose to cross-dress, not all of them who do so are transgenders.

The letter Q of the acronym has two predominant terms or meanings.

Q – Questioning: This term refers to those individuals who are non-heterosexual but quite unsure of where they belong under the LGBTQIA+ community, exploring their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Q – Queer: This is the more common term and it happens to be an umbrella term for all those individuals with fluid gender identities and sexual orientations. (According to the concept of Fluidity, sexual orientation and sexuality is continuous and changes during the course of a lifetime.) The word also happens to be a blanket term for sexual and gender preferences, orientations, and habits of the non-heterosexual population.

Thus, this term encompasses Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender along with orientations and identities that don’t fall under these categories. It has also come to be used in place of LGBTQIA+ and many of the community choose to identify themselves as Queer.

The word “queer” has a certain history to it that’s hurtful. Queer was (and sometimes still is) used to belittle or disrespect LGBT people in a derogatory manner. However, more and more people of the community have begun to use the word with pride to identify themselves.

Here’s what the letter I of the acronym stands for.

I – Intersex: Intersex stands for individuals whose reproductive or sexual anatomy cannot be defined as either of the two typical sexes ? male or female. In other words, these individuals do not have the defined sexual anatomy that can be distinguished clearly. Their biological characteristics may also vary as it does for many of those in the community.

It is imperative to understand that Intersex and Transgender are not the same.

So then, what does A stand for?

A – Asexual: There are individuals who are not sexually attracted to anyone, even if they happen to be romantically or emotionally attracted. Being Asexual has been found to have nothing to do with mental illnesses/disorders, hormonal imbalances, or even celibacy. These individuals do not feel any sort of sexual attraction and that’s that.

A – Ally: Allies are individuals who do not belong to the community per se but support the LGBTQIA+ Community in any which way that they can, and fight against the intolerance the community has been facing and faces even today.

Last but not the least, here’s what the + denotes.

+ – stands for the ever-expanding community, with many more diverse orientations, preferences, and identities of the non-heterosexual population that hasn’t yet found a place in the acronym.

Listing a few more words here that haven’t been added to the Acronym, but have been denoted by the + and are very much included as part of the community.

Cross-Gender: Refers to an individual who wears the clothes of another gender. It is considered an intrinsic part of their identity.

Pansexual: Refer to individuals who are sexually attracted to all genders and sexes.

Pangender: Refers to an individual who has a non-binary gender identity. They experience all gender identities at the same time or overtime.

Demisexual: Refers to an individual who requires an emotional bond with a person to feel sexually attracted to that person.

Polyamorous: Refers to individuals who are open to consensual romantic and/or sexual relationships with multiple consenting partners, simultaneously.

Genderqueer: Refers to individuals with no gender, both genders, or a combination of gender. It’s more of a gender term.

Two-spirit: A term that is used by Native Americans as a reference to a third gender.

Androgynous: Individuals who display both masculine and feminine traits.

Omnisexual: Same or similar to Pansexual. Difference being, persons who identify as Pansexual feel attracted to people without noticing their gender, while those who identify as Omnisexual recognize the gender of potential partners.

The terms and definitions here are extensive but are still a far way off from being an all-inclusive list. That is the nature of the community itself. These are the basic definitions and more research can yield much more information needed to truly understand the community.

The LGBTQIA+ community has been around for as long as humans have lived but the acceptance for them has just begun and it is sad to note that we are still a long way to go. The community has been facing a lot of stigma and prejudice and the first step to stop the discrimination against them is to understand that they are humans too, as much of a human as any human being out there. They deserve the respect, dignity, and freedom of expression just like anyone else.

Understanding their struggle, being sensitive to their problems, openly voicing out support, and educating those around us about the community can help reduce prejudices to a great extent. At a corporate level, policies need to be drafted to include this community, giving them a safe and secure work environment, along with equal opportunities.

This Pride Month, let’s firmly decide to not judge anyone for their looks and preferences. Let’s have an open mind work towards the freedom and the acceptance the LGBTQIA+ Community truly deserves!

Majority of us are familiar with the Pride flag. During the pride month, the six-color rainbow flag can be seen all over the stores, malls, social media and brands re-colouring their logo to match the six coloured flag. While the rainbow flag serves as a unifying symbol for all LGBTQ+ individuals, certain aspects of the Pride community have their own flags. ?Over the years, several groups, genders, and identities have created their own flags to raise awareness of their own needs and experiences. These flags give the communities a sense of representation, pride, visibility, belongingness, support and power.
