In India, lifestyle diseases are on the rise. Studies show that 1 in 4 corporate employees is at risk of obesity, and cases of heart attacks among working professionals under 40 have increased by 25% in the last five years. Long hours, stress, and sedentary work are silently shaping our health.

Good health is not a luxury—it’s the foundation of productivity, focus, and resilience. Yet, physical fitness often slips down the list in corporate culture. The truth is simple: if we don’t take care of our bodies, our work and personal life eventually pay the price.

Why Physical Fitness Matters at Work

Energy: Regular activity keeps fatigue away.

Focus: A healthy body sharpens concentration and decision-making.

Resilience: Fitness makes it easier to manage stress.

Productivity: Physically active employees are more engaged and effective.

Think about it: Can you deliver your best at work if you’re constantly tired, skipping meals, or running on 4 hours of sleep?

Quick Self-Check Scales (Test Yourself!)

Rate yourself on a scale of 1–5:

Energy Level
1 = Always tired → 5 = Energetic all day

Activity
1 = Almost no exercise → 5 = Active at least 30 minutes most days

Nutrition
1 = Poor eating habits → 5 = Balanced, mindful diet

Sleep
1 = Sleep-deprived → 5 = Well-rested daily

Add Up Your Score

Below 10: Time for urgent lifestyle changes. Start small today.

10–15: You’re doing okay, but consistency is missing.

16–20: Great! Keep it up and push for long-term fitness.

Small Steps, Big Impact

Move every hour: stretch, stand, or walk.

Hydrate: keep a water bottle at your desk.

Eat smart: swap chips for fruits or nuts.

Walk more: stairs, walk-and-talk meetings, post-meal strolls.

Sleep well: 7–8 hours each night.

Fix posture: adjust chair and screen to avoid back pain.

Building a Culture of Fitness at Work

The Direct Truth – From My Side

For me, fitness isn’t optional—it’s my responsibility.
Whenever I skip meals, sleep late, or sit all day, I notice the difference: sluggish body, slower mind, lower mood. But when I take small steps—walking 15 minutes, hydrating, or sleeping well—I feel stronger, clearer, and more in control.

My relationships, career, and happiness all depend on how I treat my body. I don’t want a health scare to remind me of this—I choose to act now.

Final Thought

Ask yourself today: Am I really taking care of the body that carries me through work and life?

If the answer is “not enough,” don’t wait. Start small. Stay consistent. Because fitness is not about being perfect—it’s about being persistent. And persistence is what creates lasting strength.

In today’s world, work culture has intensified to the point where even those who are terminally ill feel compelled to keep working. A striking example of this is an individual who, despite being gravely ill, continued to work from his hospital bed, unable to prioritize his health and well-being. This scenario reflects a broader trend where many people have adopted a lifestyle centered around “living to work” rather than “working to live.”

Factors Influencing This Work Culture

Societal Pressure and Expectations: There is immense pressure to excel professionally, driven by societal norms that equate success with long hours and unwavering dedication. This often leads individuals to prioritize work over health, fearing that taking time off could hinder their career progression.

Job Insecurity: The fear of job loss in a competitive market pushes many employees to overwork, even at the expense of their health. The anxiety of being perceived as less committed or replaceable leads to a relentless work ethic, even during times of serious illness.

Lack of Work-Life Balance: In many organizations, long hours are often mistakenly equated with productivity. This lack of balance forces employees to sacrifice personal time and well-being in their pursuit of professional goals.

Constant Connectivity: Technological advancements have blurred the lines between work and personal life. Employees often find themselves expected to be available around the clock, leading to burnout and the neglect of their physical and mental health.

How Organizations Can Help Employees Prioritize Their Health

Promoting a Healthy Work-Life Balance: Organizations should encourage employees to take regular breaks, use their vacation days, and disconnect from work after hours. Implementing flexible work arrangements, such as remote work or flexible hours, can significantly help employees manage their health and time more effectively.

Leadership Setting the Example: Leaders play a critical role in shaping organizational culture. By prioritizing their own well-being and promoting a balanced approach to work, they can set a positive example for their teams and encourage a healthier work environment.

Implementing Health and Wellness Programs: Companies can invest in comprehensive wellness programs that address both physical and mental health. This could include offering regular health check-ups, stress management resources, and access to mental health professionals.

Creating a Supportive Environment: It’s essential for organizations to cultivate a culture where taking time off for health reasons is supported and normalized. Providing paid sick leave and ensuring job security during health-related absences can go a long way in helping employees feel secure enough to prioritize their well-being.

Establishing Clear Boundaries: Setting and respecting boundaries regarding after-hours work is crucial. Organizations should make it clear that employees are not expected to respond to work communications outside of office hours, helping to reduce stress and prevent burnout.

What Individuals Can Do to Prioritize Their Health

Set Personal Boundaries: Individuals can take the initiative to set boundaries between work and personal life. This might include not checking work emails after hours, taking regular breaks during the day, and making time for hobbies and relaxation.

Communicate Needs Openly: Open communication with managers and colleagues about personal health needs and boundaries is essential. By expressing concerns about workload or the need for time off, employees can seek support before burnout occurs.

Prioritize Self-Care: Making time for self-care activities, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep, can help maintain both physical and mental health. Mindfulness practices, like meditation, can also be valuable tools for managing stress.

Recognize the Signs of Burnout: Individuals should stay attuned to the warning signs of burnout, such as constant fatigue, irritability, or a decrease in productivity. Recognizing these signs early can prompt timely action to prevent more serious health issues.

Seek Professional Help When Needed: It’s important to seek help from healthcare professionals when health concerns arise. Whether it’s consulting a doctor for physical symptoms or a therapist for mental health support, prioritizing health is key to long-term well-being.

Conclusion

The shift from “working to live” to “living to work” is a concerning trend driven by societal pressures, job insecurity, and the erosion of work-life balance. While organizations play a crucial role in reversing this trend by promoting a culture that prioritizes health and well-being, individuals also have a responsibility to take proactive steps in safeguarding their own health. By setting boundaries, communicating openly, prioritizing self-care, and recognizing the signs of burnout, employees can better balance their professional responsibilities with their personal well-being. This holistic approach, where both organizations and individuals take action, can lead to a healthier, more engaged, and productive workforce.

Embracing motherhood can be a challenge for women. The physical and emotional transformations and the hormonal fluctuations during gestation and post-delivery are innumerable, and anxiety and maternity go hand in hand. In today’s world, where women strive to strike a perfect balance between career and personal lives, the period of maternity and delivery is truly exhausting. Most new mothers experience anxiety and are perplexed about their decisions on career and family, especially when maternity leave nears closure. Given the physical exhaustion of new mothers, this can take a toll on their daily activities and emotional health, leading to stress, anxiety, and fear.

New mothers can follow these ten practical tips to successfully transition from catering to their baby’s needs to focus on their career and the baby.

Plan ahead:

A new mother should have a clear plan of when to resume office post-maternity leave, considering her physical and emotional stamina, stress and anxiety, and the child’s physical health. Most mothers prefer to extend their maternity leave by a few months, and employers are understanding and considerate enough. Communicating with the manager and working out a comfortable re-joining date makes resuming a career hassle-free. To restart the office post-maternity leave, planning ahead is the key. It gives a perfect head start to keeping the career on the right track while providing the bandwidth to adjust the baby’s needs, personal activities, and routines.

Support System At Home:

True to the saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, a proper support system at home post-maternity leave rids a new mother of her anxiety. Support at home allows a mother to focus on her career and guarantees that the baby’s safety and needs are met in her absence. The decision to resume a professional career is highly subjective and depends primarily on the mother’s and the baby’s physical health and emotional needs. It is also fundamental that the family members wholeheartedly support her decision to not let go of her career and lend a helping hand whenever possible. Discussing the options openly with the family members enables sorting things out at home in the mother’s absence.

Plan your Childcare:

Recent years have witnessed an increase in a nuclear family setup. In such cases, a mother’s anxiety and the dilemma of having a professional career post-maternity leave increases manifold. Many employers offer day-care facilities and pre-school activities on the office premises, which allows the mother to be close to the baby. Opting for a trustworthy babysitter before maternity leave ends by analysing the pros and cons, financial affordability, and thoroughly verifying the background and reliability helps in many cases where employers don’t have day-care options.

Form a new routine:

Since the baby will spend a considerable amount of time away from the mother, the need for a new routine when the mother resumes her career arises. This can put a new mother in anxiety mode. However, a little planning goes a long way in alleviating this anxiety when a mother resumes work post-maternity leave. The baby should have a daily routine, enough play activities, and adequate sleep time to be less cranky. Getting the baby accustomed to physically staying away from the mother by enabling activities with the family members/childcare/babysitter a few weeks before the mother resumes work gives the window for both mother and baby to adjust to the separation. It also alleviates separation anxiety for the baby.

Feeding Alternatives:

A new mother must plan the baby’s feeding and weaning processes well before their maternity leave ends by consulting with the paediatrician and gynaecologist. If the mother chooses not to opt for top feed, it is good to invest in a breast pump to extract and store the milk. Also, she needs to make sure that the employer provides support and space for milk extraction during office hours. This eases the mother’s concerns about breastfeeding and also assures that the baby is not deprived of the mother’s milk in her absence. If the weaning process has begun, the babysitter/family members should know the type of food fed to the baby, the right consistency, and the schedule.

Exercise, Sleep, and Rest:

Physical activities, yoga, and meditation are the key to keeping a new mother’s anxiety at bay. Exercise is considered the best among the many physical activities that help shed the extra pregnancy flab, boost stamina, and cater to a fit individual. New mothers need that pump of endorphins released from physical activities to feel energetic. Physical activities also help a mother to sleep better despite interruptions. Engaging in fitness activities like Zumba, yoga, or gym can boost the confidence of new mothers. Most importantly, adequate rest and hydration prepare the body to return to its pre-pregnancy state faster, thus acting as a boon to resume work at ease.

Open Communication:

Open communication at work and home bestows a new mother with much-needed peace of mind, easing anxiety. Raising a baby is not the mother’s task alone. A father’s responsibility, support, and understanding allow a mother to focus on her career better. Transparency between both parents offers clarity in the thought process and enables both the mother and father of a baby to be on the same page. This eases the whole process of returning to work post-maternity leave.

Communicating the expectations to the managers/higher authorities at work and working out flexible timings and projects, work from home options cater to the perfect work-life balance. New mothers should also engage in team-building activities at work to feel included. This keeps their career on track and keeps their emotional wellness intact.

Demarcate work and home:

Bringing office work home adds to the pressure and anxiety of juggling between the baby and work. Developing the habit of not taking office work home and demarcating them improves focus and efficiency. If need be, new mothers have to avail counselling through employee assistance programs and take part in self-assessment activities to know their emotional health better.

Bonding with the baby:

A new mother should primarily focus on spending quality time and bonding with the baby when at home. Engaging in playful activities with the baby is the best way to bond physically and emotionally. This makes up for the separation time and allows the mother to get rid of unwanted guilt, which otherwise interferes with work efficiency in many cases.

Acceptance:

No matter how diligently and perfectly work resumption is planned, there are always unexpected hiccups. It is difficult to shun the fear and apprehensions about being physically away from the baby, missing out on a few moments, and the guilt of entrusting the baby to someone else’s care. The only way to surmount these negative emotions is to accept them, refocus, and try to stay optimistic and happy. A mother can adopt specific activities to improve focus and acceptance, like meditation.

The year 2020 has been a ton load of all things unexpected. From having longed for unlimited work-from-home a year ago, today, most employees yearn to go back to our “normal” routines, to our workspaces, but alas!

However, considering the personal safety and safety of those around us, working from home seems the best option in current times. With the unsettling pandemic, putting our health and safety at risk would undoubtedly be unwise.

While some employees have adapted fabulously to the indefinite Working from home with assistance from their organizations, some find it all the more stressful, with the workspaces invading our homes and the work-from-home culture merging the boundaries between professional and personal lives, putting their emotional health and safety in jeopardy.

Here are a few practical but easy-to-implement tips to help you settle down better at your home workspaces, balance your work and home front, and make working from home a smooth ride.

A Dedicated Workspace:

Set up a workspace that you would use only for office work, however small that space is. Considering the pandemic, employee safety, and some employees working from their hometowns, many organizations provide their employees financial assistance to set up a workspace at home. See if your organization provides that assistance and avail the same. Use ergonomic chairs for back and neck support to avoid feeling weary by the end of a working day. It would be best if your workspace is not superimposed on your personal area of the home that is meant for relaxation. Make space for your coffee (or beverage of your choice) mug, notebooks, and other stationery you may need while working. Doing this would help you stay more focused when working and more at ease while you relax.

Draw boundaries and set expectations:

Decide on your working hours and ensure that your team is aware of the same. Beginning and ending your working hours at stipulated times helps you set expectations and ensures that you have a regular routine. Keep children away from workspaces. This brings more focus during your working hours. Make sure that you disconnect as soon as you are done with your work. Keeping your work-related devices at a place, not within easy reach further helps with the temptation of checking that mail that came in just as you were logging off or ending your working hours. (Probably saving you another 2 hours you may spend more at work, and helps spend more time with your family!) Times are challenging. If any of your loved ones are affected by Covid or your safety is compromised, inform your manager and team so that they can plan the work accordingly. If you feel overwhelmed, contact a counsellor through the Employee Assistance Program. This will relieve you of the stress and provide emotional assistance and coping mechanisms.

Take breaks:

While at office workspaces, we have colleagues and teammates who ensure that we step away from our desks and systems for a break, even if it is just for a few minutes. At home, however, the chances of us losing track of time are at an all-time high. Breaks are needed to correct our postures and stretch, failing which our joints and muscular health and safety would be compromised. Set reminders to take a 5- or 10-minute break every two hours, move around a bit, and take a few sips of water. Resist looking into your mobiles during these times and instead step out for a breath of fresh air. This can help you clear your mind for the working hours, feel more relaxed when returning to workspace, and lower your stress levels, helping you get back to work refreshed. The employee assistance programs offer workshops that help you manage your time and health better. Register for the workshops to get the needed assistance to focus on your work better.

Maintain a to-do list:

Create a To-do list that you can access from all your devices. If there is something that you remember to do, even as you relax, update your to-do list so you can refer to it when you next get to your workspace. Having an accessible to-do list helps you prioritize your work and keep track of all tasks you need to accomplish. Not only does it give you a clear picture of

your day, but a to-do list also gives you a sense of purpose and a sense of accomplishment that does wonders to your mental well-being and emotional safety.

Staycations:

Several employees have been putting off utilizing our paid leaves, stating that we are already home and do not feel the need to take a day off. While working from home has its perks, taking a day or two off can do wonders for an employee’s emotional safety, wellness, and physical health. While travelling is a risk to our safety and definitely is off the agenda, for now, you could always opt for a staycation and spend guilt-free time with family or friends. But also remember to follow the safety protocols. Do not go too hard on yourself if a day does not go as planned. The next day definitely ought to be better. Include physical activity in your daily routine, and try eating at least two healthy meals for immunity and safety during this pandemic.

These tips are simple but can make a huge difference in offering assistance to maintain a sound work-life balance while working from home during this pandemic.
